Sadly, it doesn’t have the ‘alternate history’ mechanics of Civilization as a USP, but I’m hopeful that we’ll see it blossom as it approaches its release next year.My downfall is usually that I get too eager for expansion and widen my borders too quickly. Low-key casual Strategy games are fairly non-existent nowadays. As a mostly adjacent fan of Strategy games, I’m interested in The Settlers as it falls into the same vague category as the Civilization games that aren’t focused on APM or high-octane eSports. Overall, the game is like a processing line, and I feel it's for a very particular kind of person. The utopian society in The Settlers is diverse and equal, and that was very cool to see. The developer made a point about how they’re focused on bringing emotion to The Settlers, and making sure both men and women can do the same jobs. Having not played any of the previous titles, I can’t speak to its appeal for nostalgic fans, but it was nice to see a strategy game that isn’t as hectic as usual. What I was introduced to was a very early version of the game. You can play the campaign in single-player or co-op, as well as online skirmish modes for player vs player colony-building. It was revealed that there are multiplayer options in the game too. The fortifications fit together like Lego, snapping into place and making it easy to create unique lines of defence. Otherwise, battle functions fairly similar to Total War, and you can specialize your combat units for particular jobs. It’s a slightly more… diplomatic solution than all out war. One of the last features shown was an Arena, where you can fight other colony leaders for Honor which will make an opposing settlement revolt and come and join your fight. Everyone in the society is working together, and it’s quite utopian for the most part. What you see is what you get! One of the only speed improvements is the direct action feature where you can quickly force idle settlers to do a job. You can see absolutely everything happening, instead of relying on automation and a growing number in the UI. Every fish that is caught or tree that is chopped is personally brought to the storehouse and then made available for use. The developer leading the showcase made it clear that everything is happening in real time and there are no graphs and statistics. I watched as military trainees scaled a wall, some falling and others making the cut. I got to sit down for a hands-off presentation of a pre-Alpha build of the game. Ubisoft surprised nearly everybody at Gamescom with the revelation that they would be bringing back ‘The Settlers’ franchise, 25 years after the first game.
